Japanese Woodblock Print: Rain in Higashi-Honganji Temple, Kyoto by Asano Takeji
Asano Takeji (1900-1998) was a Japanese Shin-hanga and Sōsaku-Hanga artist.
He was born in Kyoto where he studied arts and crafts at the Kyoto City School of painting with Tomikichiro Tokuriki.
He learned and was influenced by Western oil painting before returning to Japanese-style painting under Tsuchida Bakusen (1887-1936).
Asano Takeji designed many Shin-hanga style woodblock prints which continue to be printed to this day.
- This print has been newly printed from the original carved woodblocks (atozuri, later edition).
- The print features the seal of the publisher, the carver, and the printer in the margin.
Higashi-Honganji is the large and beautiful Buddhist temple in central Kyoto, not far from the railway station.
