Japanese Woodblock Print: Itako, The Lakeside Village by Kasamatsu Shiro
Kasamatsu Shiro (1898 – 1991), was born in Asakusa, Tokyo and apprenticed to Kaburagi Kiyokata to study Japanese painting at the age of 14.
Kasamatsu is a highly regarded Japanese Shin-hanga artist.
Shin-hanga (‘new prints’) originate in the 20th century and use modern papers and inks.
Western influence means that they differ from traditional ukiyo-e, and the subject matter includes landscapes, birds and flowers, kabuki actors, and beautiful women.
Shin-hanga revives the traditional ukiyo-e system of skilful artisan collaboration between the artist, the carver, the printer, and the publisher.
- This print has been newly printed from the original carved woodblocks (atozuri, later edition).
- It features the seals of the publisher, the printer, and the carver in the margin.
