Japanese Woodblock Print: Early Summer in Sanzen-in Temple, Kyoto by Asano Takeji

Asano Takeji (1900-1998) was a Japanese Shin-hanga and Sōsaku-Hanga artist.

He was born in Kyoto where he studied arts and crafts at the Kyoto City School of painting with Tomikichiro Tokuriki.

He learned and was influenced by Western oil painting before returning to Japanese-style painting under Tsuchida Bakusen (1887-1936).

Asano Takeji designed many Shin-hanga style woodblock prints which continue to be printed to this day.

  • This print has been newly printed from the original carved woodblocks (atozuri, later edition).
  • The print features the seal of the publisher, the carver, and the printer in the margin.

Sanzen-in is a Buddhist temple set in beautiful gardens in the quiet mountain village of Ohara, just north of Kyoto. Ojo Gokuraku-in Hall is the oldest temple building at Sanzenin, and it is a peaceful location surrounded by bright green moss. This building is the oldest part of Sanzen-in, founded early in the Heian era.
