Who are Kata Kata?
Takeshi Matsunaga and Chie Takai produce this traditional Japanese stencil dyeing chusen, which is a printed, dyed cloth.
Katazome is a kind of dye blocking method which uses a starch resist.
The design is drawn onto Japanese shibugami (paper which is covered in persimmon tannin), and then areas for colour are cut out.
The paper stencil is laid onto silk gauze and lacquered to create a long-lasting reusable design.
A starch resist paste is made from pounded rice flour and rice bran. It is pasted through the stencil and onto the cotton with a wooden scraper, in order to act as a colour-blocker.
After the paste has dried, the first dye colour is applied. The resist paste is then rinsed away and the fabric steamed to fix the dye.
This process is repeated until the gorgeous furoshiki is completed!
